Thread: Low Range????

To do that would be more than the car is worth.
Either get an auto which is better for the slow stuff or a Disco & really get off road.

Thinking about the layout I believe it is in practical terms impossible.
At first thought I cannot recall any transverse front engine vehicle with low range.
Buy a Disco.

Within the contrains of reasonable cost and engineering nightmares - is not really doable. I have various ideas of how to do it but other than a conceptual idea is not going to happen.

What dual range are you thinking about - where will it go? I had thought about cutting the IRD in half so it is just a power take off (PTO) to the rear and installing a rear diff in the front with a Lada Niva transfer case to replace the current viscous coupling - so the drive would come out of the current gearbox, into the PTO to the middle of the car into the lada transfer case with drive out to the rear wheels with drive also going forward to a new front diff mounted on the side of the PTO - this diff would send drive the front wheels using the same basic drive shafts as it fitted now. Result would be a constant 4wd with low range.

Yep I am off with the fairies on this one. However - when landrover were designing the Freelander this type of design would have worked well

Is great as a concept - comp type car - but - is he off with the fairies too?

Driving the Freebee off-road makes you concentrate as you have to choose different lines to other 4x4s... You also have to drive 'With Passion'! (In other words, GIVE IT SOME BEANS)

As the other guys have mentioned, an Auto box is an excellent alternative to Lo-Range.
