Put it on full lock in one direction and drive in a circle, if it chatters it is most likely the CV on the opposite side. That's what it sounds like from your description.

It doesn't sound like a CV joint, and doesn't click when on full lock.

The noise only seems to happen at 2nd gear speeds. ie when turning in to the end of the street, or coming out of the carpark at work. It doesnt happen when pulling out of a parking space, and is not there at higher speeds. Its not just in 2nd though - that was just to give an idea of speed.

Brake pads were changed tonight anyhow - so that's one job done. the drivers side pads were down to the last few mm, A warning to anyone buying a 2nd hand car, make sure you check it over thouroughly.....

I've had the front drive shafts out and swapped them over. The noise is the same. SO its not them. The wheel bearings feel good too.

Is there an easy way to check the VCU support bearings without removing the prop shaft?

If I life the front of the car and 1 rear wheel will I be able to tell from spinning the rear wheel?

Ooohhh....

Another one to quickly check is the oil level on the power steering. IIRC, it will drop to different levels on RH or LH lock and I've found that if running low it will make a knocking noise.

It probably won't be but it's worth a check...
