    IRD Bearings

    Hi All

Anyone got a list of bearings/seals needed to rebuild the IRD?

I'm hoping to source something like this from a bearing supplier: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Freelander-IRD-Unit-Overhaul-Rebuild-Repair-Kit_W0QQitemZ150337608169QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item150337608169& _trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65 %3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Hmmm, some have 4 seals, some only have 2 - Rave says 4.

    Cheers
    Mark

Try googling freelander ird and be prepared to look at a lot of pages and you will find suppliers of lots of bits and pieces.

    Mate....

Put together your list & specification of the bearings and seals you require.

Get a couple of prices from your local bearing suppliers and eBay.... (So you have a fair idea of what you are looking at, price wise.)

Remember anyone can sell you a "cheap" bearing. If you are going to do the job properly you must insist on quality brands.

Then, contact this guy in Brisbane...... I'm sure if you are up front with him, he will look after you..

I'm still not 100% that the IRD is at fault but we are picking up a new car next week so Freeda can spend a few weeks in the garage.

Prop is removed so its currently 2wd.
I have swapped the drive shafts over to eliminate CV's
Changed the right hand front wheel bearing. Noise is still there.

I'm sure its bearing noise from the IRD.

Has anyone else on here changed a drive shaft on a 1.8? When I shoved one (right hand side) back in, it clicked home and would not pull out, but it felt loose, I expected it to be solid. Pulling/Pushing at it it was solid, but if I got hold of the inner CV I could wiggle it up and down and it felt like it moved a lot more than it should have. Looking at Rave it shoved straight in to the diff. Could the support bearing on that side be knackered? I guess there is no easy way to tell without stripping the IRD?

Hi Mark, have you made any progress with the IRD yet?

I am in the middle of doing the same thing on my V6 MY01 auto. The IRD is a little harder to remove from the V6, but essentially the same, I found it best to remove the rear beam as specified, some have found a way to get it out without removing the beam but I don't know why.

There are actually 5 seals in all plus 2 o rings. Best to make sure the output shaft seal has the steel flange.
Dismantling the IRD is simple enough if the countershaft bearings do not need attention, the cooler plate can then stay in place and not risk being destroyed.

It sounds like the bearings on the input mainshaft and IRD Diff assembly are worn. Each of the 3 bearings depends on the other 2 to maintain proper support, so wear in any of the 3 or all shows up as looseness at the driveshaft/CV as you described it. Mine was the same.

The difficult part lies in re-shimming the assembly to give the correct preload on the bearings once assembled. That is where I am at the moment and I have not yet found out the correct settings/measurements to ensure preload on the bearings is correct.

The other thing to check when the IRD is open is the condition of the shims in the IRD Diff. They are subjected to considerable stress if a VCU fails (as are most components in the drive train) and they are frequently pushed out of centre and can fold on the edge, which is the only smoking gun I could find for what I thought was bearing noise, because even though my bearings were worn, they were smooth enough not to be noisy. As the shims were damaged, they created a pulsing gear noise (like bearing noise) especially when cornering.
