As the flexible joint is immediately in front of the catalytic converter it got me thinking that given the amount of soot in the exhaust (the car has covered 260,000km and looks like the original exhaust) how does the converter cope with the soot and how do you know if it is not clogged up. There does seem to be a little back pressure that could have contributed to the flexible joint failure but I do not know whether that is normal or not.

Is it possible to feed back in to the motor and trash it?
The daughter had to get a rebuild as the engine was full of soot, it is still running bad, could the Cat be backed up with soot?
