L Series Diesel Catalytic Converter

The flexible joint in the exhaust engine pipe of my L series diesel Freelander has just failed and is currently bandaged up with a muffler bandage until I get a new pipe. When putting on the bandage I got very dirty from all the black soot that had spewed out the hole.
As the flexible joint is immediately in front of the catalytic converter it got me thinking that given the amount of soot in the exhaust (the car has covered 260,000km and looks like the original exhaust) how does the converter cope with the soot and how do you know if it is not clogged up. There does seem to be a little back pressure that could have contributed to the flexible joint failure but I do not know whether that is normal or not.
Thanks
Garry
