Thread: HELP - Spare Key for FL2!!!

I've posted the below thread to Freelander2 specific section of this forum, but not sure if people even check out there so I'm moving the question to here : )

So the story is:

I've picked up a near new FL2 (MY11) from a Land Rover dealer a few days ago. The car is just stunning but it came with only one key so I need to organise a spare backup key myself.

I've spoken to a couple of Melb dealerships and have been quoted around $600!! So I've looked up the internet and found brand new genuine Land Rover Freelander 2 key fobs, which have never been programmed before, from UK for about A$150 all up. Local dealer said they would charge me $85 for programming it, but they said they can't guarantee if this is going to work?

I would've thought the key fobs are mass-produced as 'blank' first then gets programmed to become unique to each vehicle - and that should mean that buying a new blank key from UK should be working here too after it's programmed at a local dealership?

Has anyone done this before or have other suggestions for organising a spare key fob?

I hope you don't think this is a silly question

but...

why would you take delivery of it without two keys ? .... or at least an undertaking from the seller that a second key would be supplied ?

would whatever is your consumer affairs / fair trade department in Victoria be able to help ?

I'm thinking that any purchaser of a new or nearly new car would reasonably expect to receive at least two ignition keys with it, keys and/or fobs being so specific and essentially part of the security system - it's not just a matter of getting a duplicate cut.

Mate, I'm sorry I can't help you but I'm totally surprised they only gave you 1 key. It sounds like you have been ripped off. We got 2 keys with ours, are they going bad now? They are awesome cars but that would break the deal for me. Funny how a bit of stinginess sours us

The car has done over 5500km, so technically it is classified as USED. And as you know, when you're buying an Used Vehicle you're buying it As Is.
When I said 'Near New', I meant the condition of the car.

And I knew the 2nd key would cost me appox $500 (which turned out to be $600) but the deal was too good to pass. It's a Limited Edition so there aren't many around here to start with, and I got it around $7000-$8500 cheaper than ones that have been sold recently with approx 3000km more on the clock (one in Melb, other in NSW - I've been watching the market for some time)

So $500 extra out of my pocket was nothing for me. But still, it'd be good to save few hundred bucks if possible.

I know this is a little old, but how did you get on?

I would have bought the chinese clone and got it coded, this works fine in most cases for most recent cars.

I have just done it, got a spare key - 433mhz remote, genuine, from UK eBay $219 programming $82.50 & blade $17 cut $30 (mates rates, it should be $50) = $348.50 The programming included under body inspection & washing the mud & dust from 3 high country trips bargin!
