please tell me, is the td4 2014 self priming when one runs out of fuel?
or does one have to pump the fuel line manually as on other diesels

No the Freelander isn't self priming if you run it dry nor does it have a priming pump.

What you need to do is remove the line with the red button on it on the fuel filter and with a bit of 8mm hose suck on it until the filter is full of fuel. Reconnect the line and you should be good to start it.

after having cheap old cars that have diesel self priming, it's disappointing that my first more expensive new car is more primitive than those

It's a lot easier to prime a Freelander than it is an old school diesel. No tools required just a foot of hose and about 2min.

But as with all diesels you don't want to run it dry and the Freelander gives you plenty of notice before you run out.

And as far as primitive goes, we are going to have to disagree on that one.

Only as long as the fuel filter is full then yes. You'll flatten your battery before you get the fuel up if it's not.

From the manual

• NOTE: Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the engine mounted lift pump. The in-tank pump does not deliver fuel to the
engine, and only delivers fuel through the 2 jet pumps to maintain fuel in the fuel delivery pot.
The lower part of the fuel delivery module forms the fuel delivery pot, and provides the location for the in-tank pump and
the 2 jet pumps. The delivery pot provides a constant reservoir of fuel for the engine drawn fuel supply. The engine fuel
supply and return lines are immersed in the delivery pot.
The delivery pot is maintained full by the 2 jet pumps. The in-tank pump draws fuel from within the fuel delivery pot and
forces the fuel through the 2 jet pumps. The flow of fuel through each jet pump creates a venturi effect that draws fuel
from both sides of the fuel tank into the fuel delivery pot. Surplus fuel entering the fuel delivery pot overflows into the
usable side of the fuel tank.

So there is a low pressure pump inside the fuel delivery module, but it does not pump fuel towards the fuel filter.

Best way is to create a vacuum at the 8mm return line spigot using using a piece of clear hose - keep tapping the filter body until no more bubbles appear. Quickly reconnect the return line and the car will fire straight up with no problems. If you have a plastic fuel clamp it is also a good idea to clamp off the fuel feed hose before disconnecting the filter just to speed up the process of sucking fuel through the filter - then release the clamp as you apply suction.Screen Shot 12-10-23 at 07.49 AM.jpg
