    Freelander 2 - definitely a real Land Rover

    I frequent the Freel2.com forum and some of the FL2 drivers in the UK have had a problem where the car refuses to start on some occasions. To fix the problem you have pull the keys out and reinsert them but doing this resets the trip computer for some strange reason.

    A further problem affects some of the cars that have this problem where everything dies - no lights, no dash, no beeps, no door locks, nada, nothing.

    This can only be fixed by removing the negative for a few minutes and allowing the computer(s) to reset themselves.

    LR have recognised this problem and release a TSB and software update to fix it.

    I thought my car was just outside the range of cars that were built with this problem but just last week the non-start\trip reset problem hit me.

    Then yesterday I got the second problem - I arrived home got out shut the door and walked off and hit the lock button. At the time I thought something wasn't quite right but I ignored it and went inside. When I came out later on I realized that the mirrors hadn't folded in. Hmm thinks me - I can't have locked it. Grabbed the keys and then realised that there wasn't alot happening inside the car. Off with the negative for a short while and then reconnect it to have everything come back to life as if nothing was ever wrong.

    So there we have final proof to all those doubters who thought the Freelander wasn't a REAL Land Rover. Quite clearly you are wrong because the Freelander has the one key characteristic of all Land Rovers - an annoying electrical fault that can usually be fixed by disconnecting the battery


    Looks like I will be making a trip to the dealers on Thursday for a software upgrade.

    I recently had a 2001 Td4 with a similar total electrical failure, except I locked and then unlocked the vehicle using the remote and everything reappeared, started and ran fine.
    Thsi is the first of that age I have seen do this.

    I couldn't even lock or unlock the car. Absolutely everything had shutdown.

    I just hope Southside Land Rover service can squeeze me in before next Friday before I head off to Rainbow Beach \ Fraser \ Bribe Islands.

    Anyway the RedRover has a new best friend - a 10mm spanner for removing the battery leads
