Get the Diesel over the petrol.

IMO Its by far the better engine and it still really performs on road. Off-road its brilliant. The torque it produces at low revs it excellent.

Its also cheaper for registration (in QLD) being a 4 cyl compared to the petrol 6 cyl.

I've only driven the i6 when I've had my TD4 serviced at the dealer but I thought it really struggled to match the performance of the TD4 and it drank a lot of petrol.

I have an 08 TD4 and its the best car I've ever had. Unbelievable torque and great fuel economy (average in the 8's). Fantastic on road, fantastic off road once you learn how the traction settings work. A big thumbs up.

Its the horses for courses argument, everyone's needs are different.

I've got the i6 and very happy with it. Very comfortable touring car - I can do 3000 kms in a week. Engine is smooth & quiet. Very quick if you need the get-up-and-go, its a 200 kph vehicle. On the other hand, stuck at 100 kph on cruise control gives consumption in the 8s.

Can't comment on how it goes in sand, but its the best cat I've had on dirt roads. Its very well tied down. Maybe too quick!

If you want an ex demonstrator at a good price, try ringing Sutton Motors in Alice Springs. They have a grey diesel there that I am sure they would do a deal on.

Thanks for all of the comments! I think the best way for me to decide is to take both a petrol and diesel for a drive then decide. It's just a shame you can't get the factory integrated Sat Nav in the SE models

TD4 Auto... Brilliant. The i6 it brilliant too.

In sand, they're great but either way, you have to have the auto...

I know what you mean about the dirt roads, it inspires confidence that allows you to pick your speed up and before you know it you're travelling quite quick.
