Thread: Freelander 2 TD4 computer chip

Hello,
I am worried that the extra strain on the motor would break it long term. The older Jap motors built a reputation for reliability on their being grossly under powered for their spec in my opinion. Its sort of like forcing drivers to go easy by throttling the power available to them. No strain and they won't break. Remember, its only the fast race horses that break down, the plodders go forever.
I decided against it because the TD4 is pretty good as it is anyway.

I'm getting a STEINBAUER in th next month. It gives you 480nm rather than 440nm from DP Chip. For $1900 bucks i think its worth it.

I cant wait!

Unfortunately Dorko's FL2 was written off by a hail storm. From memory he was looking to sell it and may have already.

I have a 2010 TD4.. and looking for a bit more jump as well.
Anyone have:
1. a chip installed
2. installed by who, (did they do a good job)
3. Like or dislike the new programming

Seems to be some interest out there in this.

I asked Graeme Cooper's about this for my new TD4 (110kw/420nm). A lack of power is an issue only on short-sharp overtakes; I'm told one can get fuel economy improvements which given I'm getting 8.9 or 8.7L/100km instead of an advertised 7.0L/100km - is an issue. Was told "3 choices - two types of chip, third is a chip+computer tune (to your particular car), costing ~$800, $900, & $1200" (if I recall?) third option was preferred by me. GCs also said, "don't do it yet, let it run in some more, and see." I'd like less turbo-lag as well...
But: if one could get improvements in kw & nm & L/100km and no ill effects (big end bearings? Or are they already up to it?), just an improvement in fuel use of 1.9l/100 (which is 20%, but that's getting it to advertised/factory) I'd recover costs in ~50,000km and get the extras.

Please note the big IFs! Watching this thread...

Graeme cooper specialist told me that the basics of chipping is down to fuel quality.

Basically any engine manufacturer has to retune their engine to the worst fuel that engine will experience in the known market i.e. if they know an engine will be sold in somewhere such as south America where the diesel is of less quality, then all engines are tuned to that standard- weakest link in the chain if you will.

So basically, as was explained to me, chipping the engine and getting up to around 480nm from it, is really only re-tuning it to what the engine and other components were originally designed to handle.

Even so, I'd only chip it if it were out of warranty in the first place
