Thread: Shakedown trip to Canungra

This past weekend Patsy and I had the pleasure of attending a plaque dedication at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial situated in the Army Camp grounds at Canungra and we along with a number of other old phearts, camped for the weekend at the Canungra showground.
We took Daisy and Onslow down as static displays for the ceremony but apart from that we also did a shakedown trip with our new little camper trailer that we can tow easily behind a S2a.
This little trailer started out in life long ago as a Cub "Kamparoo" that I found dirt cheap on EBay, the one with the real little wheels. Now it has 14" wheels, no longer has the big flat double bed but has been converted into two raised singles with an aisle down the centre and storage space under the beds.

Now I know that a lot of you young ones are wondering why the hell did I do that when a double has so many (Well, only one really) obvious advantages, but with age apparently also comes the realisation that after the romantic bit, (Come on you blokes, time it next time) there is no one to fight over the blankets with etc., etc., but also it gives you somewhere to store things (down the aisle as well as under the bed) and also somewhere to sit when the weather turns miserable.
Anyway besides all that, I have put on a few extra storage bins, painted it bright yellow so I can find it in the dark and it has turned out quite well and was cheap as chips.
Now Onslow as you who have seen him know, has no cover or driver comforts whatsoever so I also took down our portable shade doohickey that we normally sit under for shade and, presto Onslow had his own garage.




We are looking forward to another Leafer trip as the top of this little trailer is just the right height for morning teas


The weight (around 400kgs) or more to the point, the lack of weight in this little trailer makes it ideal for towing behind a Series vehicle so now we can go away in Daisy when the opportunity arises and live with a modicum of comfort when we get to wherever we may be going (Bundaberg and Corowa spring to mind, as do various GCLRO and MJCQ weekends)
I still have to work out how to fit a tow hook to Onslow without jeopardising his authenticity, as the gunbuggies were never fitted to tow.
Anyway we had a pleasant weekend out, found one or two flaws, and of course found a lot of things that we should have taken but didn't and also ended up on power so didn't need the solar panels to run the fridge after all.
The solar panels are a bit of a problem as they are each 8mm too wide to fit on the existing frame on the trailer so it looks like I will have to do a bit more modifying after all.
The boss finds it easy to handle so as long as she is happy we are all happy!

Now, before I get into too much trouble, I saw quite a few various 4x4s on the road this weekend and most people regardless of what they are in, wave at Onslow, but I did pass one disco that waved and I had my attention diverted to what turned out later to be a binding brake at the time, and I didn't return the salute, so if it was one of you out there I apologise sincerely.

Hey I didn't knock the colour, I said it would look great behind the Game, besides, I wouldn't want to get out of sorts with Patsy.
