With a lot of construction in China and other parts of Asia, it may only take 15 seconds to come down again.

I've seen firsthand the standard of building in China - shoddy really is an understatement.
The new factories that were built for the company I work for I really worry for their longevity. Cracks appearing in concrete support structures, water leaks, water ingress, rusty steel reinforcement......
There is a real mix in there. Its a country that is slowly educating itself with construction - something that I also noted while over there recently. Even though that building was built in 6 days, the structure of it looks particularly rigid. It may crack with its bolt together design, but I doubt very much that it will ever fall down.

The problem is not necessarily with the design and specifications but with quality control and corruption in the building of them.
A recent example is the heavy oil power stations being built by a Chinese company in East Timor. The Dili Government has sacked the Chinese construction company responsible for the project. "The report, which was obtained by the Dili-based non-government organisation La'o Hamutuk, revealed a deteriorating quality of work, safety practices that were ''far below regulations'' and acts of ''environmental negligence'' at the plant sites." China's old power plants spell disaster for Dili
In other failures it has been revealed that builders had scrimped on projects by corrupt practices like putting less reinforcing in structural elements than called for by engineers or building codes.

i am with you Simon i worked in China in 2004 as a training organiser for a goverment funded construction aid and Simon is right "A REAL MIX" no one mentions the builders building massive skyscrapers in the hub or ground breaking hydro electric schemes with the biggest dams been diverted ect ,there are dodgy builders everywhere ,and we prosecute at least a dozen every week here in Australia its just you dont here about them
cheers Kelvin
