There are some really cheap TD5's that come up on trading post from time to time. Seen them from $13000 up

May as well throw some variables into your car search equation as well since I have a modified TD5 D2. If it were me and I had my time again, I would go the D1 over the D2. But only as it would be a dedicated off road car nd not a daily driver. You have seen my D2 and although it has it's limitations in terms of flex, she goes pretty well in the rough stuff......albeit with the occasional help of that good fellow Mal at Maxi Drive I have ACE, which does flex slightly better than those without, and Justin has modified my rear suspension to give me a little more flex. Although a small change in droop, it does make a difference and I still have stock brake and ABS lines.

The questions I would ask before you buy/test drive is primarily what are you going to use the car for? Is it going to be a daily driver or is it going to be a project you will keep modifying? D1 or D2 you will spend $ modifying if it is your play car but yes, generally the D2 will cost you more to run I would suggest. I however, love my D2 as it is comfortable, capable and.......well sometimes better with the devil you know

TD5 is not bad engine and if chipped correctly, is a great engine. Mine is a manual but I would suggest an auto in the TD5 as the auto box is better suited to the TD5 engine.

Other than that, depends on $ and how you are going to use the car. As I said before, if I had my time again I would buy a D1 as they are easier and probably cheaper to modify, but then you do sacrifice some level of interior and on road comfort IMO, so your family may wish to go newer

Probably confused you more now but welcome to take a look/drive of the mack truck anytime you are in the area if you want to gauge how a reasonably modified D2 TD5 goes.

Well I've been searching very hard to try and find a replacement Disco, but to no avail. Considering everyone says LR's are unreliable pieces of rubbish, they certainly seem to sell fast. 10 of the 12 Disco's I had on my list had sold before I even had the chance to see them.

I managed to test drive a 97 auto TDi today, and I have to say I was impressed with the performance......I was expecting it to be really slow, but if you put your foot down, there was plenty there. I had no trouble pulling away from traffic, and cruising on the highway in it.

So looks like I've decided to follow all your advice and stick with D1. The only problem is there are hardly any late model TDi autos around on the market. I'm just going to have to be patient I think.....which will be quite hard for me.

Looking forward to catching up with you all again on Thursday Night though.

You must of test driven a good one. I've driven a few tdi's and they're all gutless off the mark and that turbo lag really annoys the **** out of me. In saying thatn they have plenty of poke once the revs build up and would match the V8 in some instances without the horrenous fuel consumption.

How much were they. I would say at least the $10K mark as a start off price. Most of the cheap tdsi's have 300K plus and a bit scrappy overall but you get what you pay for (I'm just a cheap ***** that's all )
