Locker Tomorrow! Front or Rear?

I looked into using a D1 hi/low/CDL lever in my D2 but found some posts that said it would not fit. With the new cable activation they shifted the location of the level and the space available or something like that. All the posts I found said you would need to stick with the D2 lever from a later model disco where they put the CDL back in.

If you have a D1 transfer case on the floor look - using a mirror - to see how the D2 cable attach - the centre diff/transfer case is essentially the same. The Electrics probably all take an earth signal off the diff lock engaged sensor in the transfer case. If you re good with electrics you probably could marry them up. I did this when I put a transfer case with center diff into the rangie that only had viscous coupling.

I see yours is a 99 model - did it have the centre diff lock cable and actuator - ie push the lever sideways as per the D1 to get the centre diff engaged? My 99 did not have the level to do this so had set up my own cable under the dash. Some D2s did not even have the centre diff components and need the transfer case to be changed over.

Good luck with the mods - am interested in the fitting of the locker. I have a locker on my floor waiting to go into my D2 - but I have not found I have needed it yet - traction control seems pretty good. So will be watching to see what you think of the locker.

The MY99-01 models did not have the lever fitted for the CDL, only a hi-low lever, but the internals are in the transfer case. They were completely removed in the MY02 models and was completely reinstated lever and all in the facelifted My03 model.
Like you say Keith, the input for the ECU might just work off the hi-low switch, which as far as I am aware a D1 transfer case would not have. Now while the ECU might not need the input from the transfer case, the ACE will not disconnect as the ECU will think it is still in high range.
Personally Shamo I wouldn't fit the D1 transfer case, it has done about 400 000kms and has had water through it. Best bet would be to remove it open it up and fix the worn dog gear that is the cause of all this...hopefully.

I bought the locker because when i got the car i changed the diff oil and found some very large chunks of metal, so i pulled out the centre and found that the planetry gears were absolutely rooted. I understand that where the prop shafts meet the diff centre will (cant think of the name, flanges perhaps?) will have to be swapped, does anyone know if this is a big deal? or is it simply just a matter of a few bolts that need to be undone/redone?

You know what? I'd put it in the front. I've got front and back and when the rear played up I found it didn't make much difference. Even with cdl in the drive at the front is quite weak. If you put it in the front you will have 3 wheels driving at full power.

That doesnt make sense. And i guarantee you when you actually physically need a locker (a lot of people use them all the time even when they are not needed) it will benefit you more in the rear. No 'ifs' no 'buts'.

I can only think of a hand full of times where I really would have needed a locker and I know exactly where I would put it.

I have already put the locker in the rear mudsloth, sorry mate. I just need flippin low range so i can go and try it out properly!

Took the transfer case out today, after adjusting everything that could have been a problem i.e cable, some grommet thing at the back that adjusts a spring, and the lever itself. So i gave up and called techno brittish, they quoted me 6 and a half hours at $88 an hour to take the transfer case out, that was before there was any repairs done haha so i stopped being lazy and took it out with Dano (the fish) and another mate jack. Took us 2 and a half hours, so saved a bit of money there.

Steve (techno brittish) said he'd have a look at it tomorrow. I'm hoping it is a an easy-ish (as easy as it could be being a trans case) fix and have the thing offroading asap!
