Locker Tomorrow! Front or Rear?

Hey guys,

I get my ARB air locker tomorrow (as you may have read above) and i cant decide weather i should put it in the front or the rear.... I am getting arb to put it in the diff centre (the centre is out of the front) and i'm not sure weather i should pull out the rear and put it in the front and put the front one in the rear so its locked or just to put the locker in the front?

I bought the locker because when i got the car i changed the diff oil and found some very large chunks of metal, so i pulled out the centre and found that the planetry gears were absolutely rooted. The pinion and crown wheel however were in really good condition still (thank god) and i decided to spend the extra money on a locker now rather than buying another standard diff centre (which i hear are pretty **** house anyway).

I understand that where the prop shafts meet the diff centre will (cant think of the name, flanges perhaps?) will have to be swapped, does anyone know if this is a big deal? or is it simply just a matter of a few bolts that need to be undone/redone?

The flanges are a straight swap. There is one bolt in the centre and they should then just slide off the splines. the bolt is likely to be quite tight.

I'd put it in the rear.

Is it possible they could be tighter than the f'in steak nuts on the ends of the hubs? because i can handle it if they are less than that haha.

Also i should add im only going to run 245/75r16 tyres now (well for a little bit anyway) instead of 33s straight away because i had to fork out so much for this locker (haha poor uni student) would this effect things i.e i've heard that a locker and 33s on the front will break my cv's and with the smaller tyres it wont?

And Yeah, Rear locker work best !!
But !! Now l run 33's, l carry a spare long axle in the back.
Yes, it will no doubt happen at some stage.

Hey Shamo,

No they probably wont be that tight. I did a pinion seal on a D2 a while back where the garage that had worked on it previously left the bolt loose.... undid it by hand. lol

The breakages thing is a difficult one. As you know I run 33's or 35's all the time, with twin ARB's and I have only ever broken 1 rear shaft (long one). never done a CV, and I give my car a fair workout. (Having said that I am close to upgrading)

D2 stuff is stronger than Defender/D1 stuff in terms of axles and CV's anyway (Centres are nearly identical) so I think you will be fine I certainly wouldnt overly worry if it was me.

Hahahehe i may have a stash... but now its low lol time to sell some stuff!!

Thanks for all the advice guys, looks like ill be changing some stuff around tmrw then! Can't wait to have it on the road ill tell you that much

c'mon down to crystalvale and we will see if one spare long axle in the back is enough!!

he says with some knowledge,
and two broken axles.

and yeah, put it in the rear, or you will be upgrading the front axles and cv's soon.
