    Hey beefy -how you going?

Which model is best on fuel? - V8's of course. You see, it is something you just don't worry about.

Have you seen the episode of Top Gear where they drove a Prius and a V8 BMW together around their track?

    The Prius used more fuel.

They were trying to make the point that it is not what you drive, but how you drive it that matters.

While that is a bit of an oversimplification, there is some truth in the idea that there can be a lot of difference between drivers and driving styles.

So the fact that one member might get better economy from a 300 Tdi than you get from your Td5 doesn't mean much.

BTW, I got just better than 9.5 litres/100 km with an empty vehicle on my last two trips to Camden and to the Central Coast. I have also got the same figure with the camper on in Tasmania where it is harder to get up to speeds where wind resistance becomes significant.

    1973 Series III LWB 1983 - 2006
    1998 300 Tdi Defender Trayback 2006 - often fitted with a Trayon slide-on camper.

I reckon it could well be mine Kieth. Conistently get 7.2 to 7.8 litres per 100 kms on mixed City - Highway running. 1993 Tdi running diesel and lpg, over 1,000 k's per tank.

I used to run a 94 V8 and the 20 ltrs per 100 kms was killing me. I love my Tdi and she is easy to service, no pesky electronic fancy gizmos to go bust on me. Oil and filter every 10,000 ks and she sweet.

I'd recommend the addition of lpg and a 15 ltr lpg tank to anyone on diesel. You only need a small tank as I understand it adds the gas into the air intake and burns the diesel more efficiently giving you the good mileage.

The guy I bought it from rebuilt the engine and so far in 60,000 k's I have replaced brake pads all round, shockers and some steering components and a faulty clutch slave cylinder. All bought el cheapo from ebay uk.

Cheap happy motoring in my LR. Happy chappy.
