I also don't see why hail damage alone would make it unregisterable.
MatBor I'm in Tecoma, and RACV are repairing my 96 disco. Got it booked in with dentaway in Bayswater for 8th April 4 days to remove the dents.
I spoke to RACV with the VIV inspection, the lady told me the RACV would help customers with this as it is only a visual damage not a mechanical writeoff. RACV are willing to talk to customers and will insure hail damaged cars where the companies are writing everything off and not insuring hail damaged cars i was told.
Also A few neighbours are saying to me "Unlucky I'm with AAMI", seems they offering little and writing off cars to resell for profit maybe??
Mine has been written off because they took one look at the roof and said it can't be repaired cheaply, so it's cheaper for them to write me a check, lucky it was at agreed valve, not market!
A family before me had 4 of there cars written off in one go, and they where a LOT more cars sitting around with no plates on them.
The problem from what I can understand is Vicroads because as soon as RACV writes it off, it then becomes RACV's property. RACV then have to notify Vicroads and tell them if it is a 'repairable write off' or a 'Statutory write-off', from that point I can purchase the car back from RACV at the salvage value, but in Victoria, you have to get it inspected by the vehicle identity validation team and then get it re-roadworthed and re-registered.
found more info on the web....
"A repairable write-off is a vehicle that has been involved in an accident and VicRoads agrees it can be repaired for use on the roads. The car must be repaired to manufacturer’s standards, pass a roadworthy and a Vehicle Identity Validation (VIV) report before it can be re-registered.
A vehicle will be considered a repairable write-off if the salvage value, plus the cost of repair for on-road use, is more than its market value.
The current registration of a repairable write-off will be cancelled once it is entered on the Written-off Vehicles Register."
So my salvage value is $2,400
Repairs, well anyones guess really, but certainly more than $2,000/$3,000
Rough market value is $4,500
What is a Vehicle Identity Validation (VIV) certificate?
A VIV certificate is a document issued by a VicRoads VIV inspector after inspection of the vehicle to ensure that the identity of a repairable write-off is that of the previously damaged vehicle, and not that of a rebirthed stolen vehicle, and that the vehicle has been repaired to manufacturer’s standards.
This is the other thing, will they pass a car with a roof that looks like a golf ball, espically if it has to be repaired to manufacturers standards, you could probably get away with this on a defender though :D
Matt.
Had my Puma defender assessed by Racv on Saturday. Paintless dent guys cant fix it so it going to be repaired by a conventional panel beater.
I'm hoping I can at least get a new roof, otherwise it will need a LOT of bog which I dont want.
Every panel except back door has some damage but RACV wouldn't write it off.
If I was you Matt, I would just take the money and get another one. Strip as many accessories off as you can before you give it to them.

Any good panel beater (this is what my brother inlaw said to me, 20yrs a panel beater) wont normally bog a roof like that, too much flex. He said mind u RACV do like to cut prices sometimes.
Think it is going to be written off, and accessories sold off. Well that is my thinking as of 11am today.
Matt.
I would give vic roads a call and find out what is involved with the VIV check and how much has to be repaired. The idea of the check is to stop cars being rebirthed and seiously damaged cars getting back on the road. A 10+ year old car will be written off with very little damage and can be fixed relatively cheaply and easily.
If you are looking for panels give Steve a call on 0412 075 002
He sells bits on ebay and when I was there on the weekend looking for a door he has aout 15 D1's most of which have all the panels still available so you may even get the colour you want without a respray.

If you can get all of the aftermarket accessories off it that you can and let them take it and buy a new one.
If you cant look at what accessories and modifications are there that you could salvage from the Disco and see if they are worth the amount they are willing to sell it back to you for.
