Hello all, help required.
My wife is learning to drive (don't ask her age!) and we are dumping the 1994 Disco TDi in favour of a more refined auto. Obviously I'm keen to keep it in the Land Rover stable so was tossing up between a 2001 Freelander and a late 1990's Rangie. What do you reckon? The car would mainly be used for short trips around town, but with 2 or 3 big trips a year into the great beyond. We've got two kids (6 months and 2 years).
Thank you in advance of the advice I know you guys will so graciously provide.

You wont find many positive responses when you mention the word Freelander, personally although it might seem like an ideal car for the wife it would possibly be the last car on the planet i would buy - i wouldnt even take one that was given to me, FL2 on the other hand.

I think the Freelander is a great car - at least ours seems to be. My wife drives one, for pretty much the same prurposes as you have described. It's a great, solid little car and very economincal.
However, ours is a 2004/05 model TD4 which is the last of the first series. I think they might have finally ironed out all of the bugs by then.
I would recommend as late a year as possible to avoid some of the pitfalls that have given this car such a bad reputation.
The other option is .... get both.

Why not a late 90's D1 auto or a D2 possible a better deal than a P38a
