Ah - pity cos I used to do that, even won a couple of medals....

are you not claiming through insurance, surely they would organise it, or do you have to get your own quotes?

good point... i thought fences were fences

Its a cement fibro thing... hardifence or whatever its called. Dunno if we want it replaced with that.. but need a quote for the payout.. and then we can decide on whats going there!

i guess now that there are steel fencers, cement guys etc etc etc..

    Thanks

There are one or two guys in the Quokka and/or the local papers who replace/install fibro fences, and have a simple charge of $$$ per panel in their ads.

I think it is around $80/panel from memory. Definitely your cheapest option. (not sure if they charge extra to cart the old panels away if yours are asbestos)

    I recently built a 21m x 2m treated pine paling fence for $750 - parts only.

Brick or brick with timber infill is more expensive again - there are a few brickies on here who could give you an idea.

Good luck with it Steve and let me know if you find someone please

I've had about 18 months of drama with my fences since the storms late 2008...

Replaced the old Hardifence with Colorbond and it's been the worst thing I ever did - not saying it's no good, because it is - but in my application it was a bad choice...

    Cheers

any more info on that mike? we were thinking of going colourbond as it then matches the neighbours patio etc but if there is a certain reason why it isnt good... then i'd like to know!

Thanks Isuzu.. i'll take a look...

We will need the old stuff taking away... not sure that its asbestos as it was made in 93 so would be a bit late for that... still crappy stuff to dispose of tho!

    Thanks

It looks great! It matched the render on the house and the rails matched the gutters and it went up in the blink of an eye...and saved the labour costs of digging a trench for the Hardifence.

However I'm "on top" of a sand dune with a vacant block behind facing south west. So every time we have a serious sea breeze or a good blow from the Southern Ocean in winter it catches it like the sails on Australia II - and over she goes, it seems you can't get enough footings in the ground to hold it up against that punishment. Added to this my insurer won't do anything about it as they say the application/installation is wrong, yet they're the ones who gave me a cheque when the 30 year old asbestos gave up (it had been doing pretty well) and said "you fix it, we're too busy with all the others" - if only it had been their installer...

In addition, because the garden's not level, the fance has gaps underneath heare and there, so as the wind hits it, it goes up and over as well as down and under - scouring sand out as it goes - and looking like a scene from Lawrence of Arabia!

That and the gaps at the bottom mean I've caught more Dugite's this past summer than Harry Butler!

Hope that helps Steve. In Kinross if you're not in a too elevated position with some solid-ish ground for the footings it will be fine, witness the kilometres of it in every suburb doing it's job without a problem. It's just turned into a disaster for me because I live "on a sand dune" - at least that's what the insurer said after they "looked it up on Google Earth"!!

    Cheers

That sounds pretty bad!!! If your house can stay put without moving then I am sure there is a footing design for your fence posts which can as well...

Maybe have a chat to Mike90RR on here - or talk to someone like Structerre who specialise in footing designs.
