    FISHZILLA

    G'Day All,
    Check this out....BLOODY SCARY!!!
A SAVAGE fish described as more terrifying than a piranha is on Queensland's doorstep and authorities fear it may soon be here.

The vicious giant snakehead, which has been the star of a horror movie trilogy, eats everything it comes across and has even been reported to kill people.

The monster - from south-east Asia - has a mouth crammed with fearsome teeth, can "crawl" on land and survive out of water for up to four days.

The fish is a declared pest in Queensland but researchers fear snakehead, which has been found on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea, may be brought to the Torres Strait, from where they could reach mainland Australia.

Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research director Damien Burrows told The Cairns Post there was a danger snakehead and other pest fish species such as the predatory climbing perch posed a big threat to native wildlife.

He said snakehead and climbing perch could both easily reach Cape York.

"They’re only going to get there if people move them, and that makes it an unpredictable quantity," he said.

Snakehead have already invaded waterways in the US with the respected National Geographic describing the species as "Fishzilla".

wasn't it the Cairns post that warned us a few years ago about the threat of the "Neema Toad" a voracious amphibian that was going to destroy the agricultural industry? I remember them giving it a serve on Media Watch.

Snakeheads (the fish) are commonly found in tropical Asia where they are extensively eaten. They are a potential problem in Australia but the article in the Cairns post leaves a fair bit to be desired. To start with, the image is certainly not of a snakehead. The image may well have originally come from here Snakehead Fish Caught In Lincolnshire, You Can Hook Your Own Monster Fish In Thailand || Jaunted. Snakeheads would be most unlikely to survive in English waterways! You can find plenty of images of what they are really like with a simple Google search. While snakeheads can utilise atmospheric oxygen they must remain moist to do so. They can move short distances between ponds and other waterways during the monsoon season but could not last for 4 days out of water unless it was very damp. Our very own freshwater eels can also move short distances across the land but again they require very damp conditions. The following provides useful information about snake heads: http://fishing.about.com/od/fishfacts/a/aasnakeheadpr.htm.

    Cheers

As for the nematode: that really is a monster! The image is a VERY much larger than life size bronze sculpture from the the American Museum of Natural History.
