    Newbie with questions

    Hello all,

this is my first time at this forum and I'm also a relative newcomer to Australia, so hello all you fellow Land Rover people out there...

Since arriving from the UK I've been on the lookout for an ex military Landy but with little success. I really want another lightweight as I had to get rid of my old one before I moved out here. Am I just looking in the wrong places or are they as scarce as they seem?

But really that's just me dreaming...what I really need to know is what the rules are about putting a spare wheel on the bonnet.

I'm currently driving a 2000 Defender 110 td5 and the spare hanging off the back door has caused stress fractures in the door construction. And looking at the design I'm not all that surprised - it looks like a bit of a quick fix from Land Rover to get around EU regulations about things on the bonnet.

Looking at Australian rules however, I can't find anything definitive about the issue - only things that could be interpreted one way or another, and talking to Queensland transport resulted in the same non committal response. So any help with this would be appreciated.

Also, if I can put the wheel on the front, anybody know a good product to fix it there? And am I right in thinking I'll need some sort of reinforcing for a td5 bonnet?

    Cheers

    Simon.

    G'day Wistlingcoyote

Welcome to Aust Simon, and welcome to AULRO and to answer your questions, yes, lightweights are quite rare out here,as the Aust army did not use them,we had the Perentie,(3.9 Izusu diesel powered 110 and it's 6x6 version) there may be as many as 40 lightweights out here, mostly private imports but some coming from Bruni, as for the bonnet mounted spare on a 110/Defender the army perentie had a modified bonnet capable of taking the weight of the tools on it(Gardening Tools)as their spare was carried underneath on the modified chassis, they turn up at Landy wreckers from time to time,I am not sure if they were available as a spare part.

As far as I am aware there is not a blanket restriction as to the spare on the bonnet as my Aust military 2a and most series vehicles carry theirs on the bonnet.

PS I am aware of 1 Ser3 lightweight that is for sale in Qld but it IS dear, If you had jumped on the website before you left UK most of the Ex military boys would have advised you to bring your lightweight with you.

    cheers

Hi Simon why not get a spare wheel carrier that hangs off the back of the chassis instead of the door? Saves the back door and the bonnet...!
