Often you hear and see articles bagging the asian countries like Vietnam, Cambodia etc in taking risks and unsafe work practises.
But after watching a few episodes of that Discovery channel doco Dirtiest Jobs, I wonder if the good old USA is any better.
I have seen many a confined space entry entry undertaken without the operator having any safety harnesses on nor any safety atmosphere detectors on his person. After doing many confined space entries myself and having to do a course to get accreditation it makes me wonder if Australia has some of the worlds tougher regs? We are not allowed any entry without the proper PPEs etc.
Then the other night on TV again, a termite pest control operation. they jack up a termite infested church with a car trolley jack, the jack plate is a couple of aerated concrete blocks and a couple of Besser Bricks. ( These crack and collapse), then they do it again and a guy climbs underneath whilst it's supported this way.
They then start spraying the termite poison around and the hose and fittings on the wand leak and they cop a face full of poison. The poison is spraying every where!. Not even a full face visor is worn.
The guys doing the exterminate look like a bunch of amateurs.
Makes you wonder what they are thinking and are poeple really that stupid, I know some of the poeple in the USA are weird though.![]()

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
You only have to look at the number of confined space deaths in Aus each year to see that we aren't that great either. Even "trained" people are killed because of stupid errors or laziness in confined spaces.
Right now our own Govt is spending millions to defend itself against claims of defence force personnel who have terminal illness (or have died) through poor confined space procedures/training/equipment. See here Goop Troop.Com and here F-111 Deseal/Reseal
The F111 deseal-reseal fiasco is probably our greatest national shame, and the least well known. I've seen studies that suggest over 10,000 people have been exposed to the chemicals from this programme. There are very few industrial disasters that rival this programme for sheer scale (and govt hipocricy).
Cheers,
Adam
Seems to be a state driven thing (EHS) as opposed to national legislation as it is in oz.
A good one in the same vein as dirtiest jobs was "worlds toughest fixes" on the Nat Geo channel.
The bloke in it was a rigger going all over the world doing different jobs, one week he was replacing a tail fin of a passenger jet in the states somewhere, which was done similar to it would have been done in oz (I'm guessing) and then next week he was removing a barge that was stuck somewhere else in the states (down south AFAIR) which was the dodgiest thing I have ever seen. Nearly squashed the hole crew when an air bag rolled!
