    Prado 150 and 220volt

am told the new prado 150 has a 150watt 220volt inverter in the rear as standard equipment.

have also heard that some manufacturers have started putting green stickers on to indicate high voltages are present.

does the new prado have warning stickers...

i can see this ending in tears myself....

... and many frizzy haired T0yota driver sitting in a smoking heap on the floor!

Imagine what this will do to their vehicle control systems, currently they are blaming the sticking throttle/cruise control on cosmic rays, who knows what 220VAC will do!!

Showing their usual product knowledge and attention to detail, one of the mags was mystified why the Prado should have an OZ three pin plug on the 12 volt connection in the back.

Maybe the same "experienced" journalist who thought there was something wrong with the Pajero cruise control when it dropped out on steep hills after losing 10Kmh. AFAIK all cruise controls do that, but admittedly I am not familiar with teh Paj one.

I don't get it - why would it have a 220V inverter here in Oz?

BTW - I have a 240V, 300W inverter in mine - installed with drivesafe present.

Are we saying inverters are not safe??? I mean - apart from a source of 240V
    - but so is each of our bedrooms.

I think because it allows people to charge caravan batteries whilst towing with an ordinary 240V battery charger. Drivesafe is probably the person to explain the problem/danger of doing this.

There's potential a safety issue if there's an accident and the inverter is still live and the rescue guys start cutting into the vehicle with the jaws of life or similar.

Hi folks, while the chances of someone getting electrocuted is very low, it’s still an unnecessary risk and I’m still totally against this sort of set up when it’s done as a DIY in a camper trailer or caravan, for the obvious reasons.

When done by the manufacturer during production of the vehicle, one would hope they have reasonable safe guards in place.

By the way, this is not new, VW have been putting low wattage 220vac power sockets in the centre console in a number of their vehicles for many years.

Hi Scallops, the 220vac is fine for use here and we are eventually going to standardise along with the rest of the world and go to 220vac.

    Scallops,

I believe the reason why a low voltage is used in vehicles is to reduce the chances of electric shock due to the possible exposure to water. 220 V AC does not offer the same safety margin.

In your bedroom it is less likely that your AC power outlet will be subject to exposure to water than in a vehicle. It is simply a case of trying to reduce the possiblity of people injuring or killing themselves.
