The 3 ltrs had problems up intil 2002. There was a problem with the oil pick up from the sump not feeding two of the cylinders and thus causing the inevitable hand grenade result. From 2003 onwards, this problem was fixed.

No, it sure wasn't. I've perused the Nissan forum months ago - was thinking about buying a 3 litre. Very different bunch of guys to us Landy guys. They are very down on Nissan for not resolving the 3 litre problems. The common rail motor is little different evidently

    ZD30

The ZD30DD is fitted to the Navara/Hardbody and Patrol, as well as the Terrano.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_ZD_engine]Nissan ZD engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Yep, a real grenade of a motor, all caused by several key issues:

    - heat
    - overfuelling
    - overboosting (see the two above)

So in essence, a fine motor, with issues caused by the manufacturer.
Some claim the 2003-onwards engines are better: in truth, I doubt Nissan changed the basic donk much. They prbably just played with the ECU and the fuel delivery. I hear the factory remedy for the Patrol is an ECU map change.
Toyota had the same problem with their 3-liter diesels, and even the well-known KZ-TE was known to explode. Over-stressed 4-pot diesels are an issue, hence LR's move to TDV6 and TDV8.

As for the Navara/Pathfinder common-rail motors: time will tell, but a little bird has spoken regarding Nissan DE-TUNING those motors for several reasons:
    - clutch problems
    - engine lifetime issues with the extended service intervals.

Like Africa, Australia has a tad more dust than Europe: I suggest ALL owners of modern TDCi type engines rather service at 10,000kms MAXIMUM. I don't CARE what the booklet or the dealer principal says......

I wouldnt stretch more then 10,000km for an oil change no matter how clean it burned... Anyways, the other problem with these motors was that apparently the breathers were fed in front of the AFM which caused it to think that it was not producing as much boost as it was and wanted more... which caused the lean out..
