    Sensitive to obstructions – safety bounce back feature
    Beef it up and it'd be able to bounce you off obstructions.

    I remember a mechanical verision on our old Ford Transit Mini-bus when I was a kid (mid 1970's)
    The action on the side rear door (a Hinged door, not a sliding door like more modern vans) deployed the step.

    We had an electrically operated step on the Renault motorhome we had in UK. Good for height challenged people.
