    Non Land Rover Question (again).

Some of you may have seen my thread a week or so ago about wrecking my EB Series2 Falcon when I hit a deer. Following on from that I started looking for another car while also fixing the fender up again. Yesterday I bought an ex taxi from over near Echuca in Vic, it's an AU Series 2 Falcon and I got it very cheap. The main problem with it is that it blows smoke on startup so I thought that before I go ahead and do an engine swap from the EB into the AU I'd ask the boffins on here if I was right about what is wrong with the au's engine.

When I start it up it blows out a profuse amount of white smoke, once the revs are increased it turns slightly brownish. After 5 minutes of driving the smoke has completely disappeared and the only way to get the engine to smoke again is to drop the revs right back and then rev the engine. My first guess is that there is oil getting up past the piston rings and that once warm the oil can no longer get past. Anybody else got any other ideas?

The car is a dream to drive and the engine is very quite and not at all rough so until I have a weekend (or three) to spare I think I'll leave the engine in for now.

Well I would have thought that car for car a taxi would be much less likely than a "civvy" car to have valve stem wear "at the same Kilos" ,seeing they are always warm and will have plenty of residual oil around the valve gear.

However this is a big caveat as most taxis have been around the world a few times. So I would say she is just tired and generally stuffed including valve guides, rings, bearings and anything else you can think of.

Swap the other engine over including head, although a head service is pretty cheap.
    Regards Philip A

We used to see it a lot in cars running LPG that never ran petrol, like taxis. Normally you would run some kind of upper cylinder lube if you went pure LPG but the taxis never used to want to spend the cash. Engine oil isn't lubricating the valve stems - fuel is providing that lube.

The taxi used to do the run between Echuca and Bendigo so it was mainly country miles, hasn't been stopping and starting all the time or sitting with the engine running at the airport. The other thing is that it doesn't have gas nor has it ever been on gas as far as I can tell.

I'm thinking that I might change it to a heavier viscosity oil and see if that helps. I only paid 600 for it so I figure I can't loose.

The 'WHITE SMOKE" could also be coolant from a leaky head gasket blowing out the exhaust.

$600 for a running AU? Cheap motoring!

Thats what I thought Jon, that's also the reason I spent 12 hours on the road to get it yesterday, those sort of opportunities don't come up very often.

Itsnotworthcomplaining, is there any way of ascertaining easily if the smoke if from water or oil? Unfortunately the overflow tank has a pinhole leak in the very top so I can't really monitor the water level. There is no mixing of the oil and water though.

you may find you'll have issues putting the EB engine into the AU, essentially the same engine, but AU's had different engine mounts, etc IIRC

Hi Sprint, I had thought that the mounts were bolted on to the engine block? Is this the case or are they part of the block? Also what do you mean by IIRC? Thanks.
