    Who's been to king island?

Hmm, Norfolk island seems intrigueing, but looking at something I could do for a get away for a week, soemthing out of the ordinary and I do like to take my car, so who has been? is it worth it? and how do you get your car on a ship to get across?

Just running some thoughts, boredom in life ensues, must finish landrover and travel aus

Well, I lived on Norfolk Island for three years but I haven't been to King Island.

    Here's a late friend's Defender being delivered:

I thought Fusion originally came from King Island.

I know that two of the forumites I met at Cooma in 2008 originally came from King Island - was one of them Fusion?

I lived on King Island for about 5 years, but it was some time ago - when the Scheelite mine at Grassy was still in operation.

Back then, the only way to get a vehicle onto the Island was on the Straitsman, from either Melbourne or Stanley - but I believe that the Straitsman is now in New Zealand or Fiji or somewhere that way.

The only info that I have seen on shipping to the Island lately is that Searoad Shipping operates the Searoad Mersey on a weekly service to the Island.

Wouldn't mind getting back there for a look myself one day - it was a great place to live and I still have a couple of friends living down there on a farm.
    Cheers .........

The Straitsman rolled over and sank in Melbourne harbour in 1974. It was salvaged and then serviced King Is for a further 15years before it was sold off to Fiji and given a new name.

I last visited King Is in 1977 and all I can really remember are the huge black tiger snakes all over the island, the huge lobsters, the kelp and the huge swell that rolls in on the west coast even when the water itself was mirror smooth.
