LOL.. well you pro speed limit people deserve this type of torture. We would all be far far safer if the speed limit was 0. The road toll would most probably be 0 too - or close to it. We should do that as a matter of urgency!

Once you sign up to the "speed kills" brainwash school it's impossible to debate that slower isn't safer and this is the kind of rubbish you end up with.

All objective research shows that it's differences in speeds between road users that kill, not absolute speed. Ie if everyone is travelling at 80 in a 100 zone, then that is the safest speed. Same if they are doing 120 in the 100 zone... 120 is the safest speed.

The world would be a far safer if people were taught to look the hell where they are going and pay attention to their surroundings rather than constantly ensuring they remain compliant with an arbitrarily determined number.

Funny thing is Matt, the cyclist at work told me that here in Tassie anyway a cyclist maybe booked for going the wrong way on a one way street or even for speeding!!!

road safety campaigns, tougher speed restrictions, speed cameras and so on have over the decades lowered death and injury rates on roads as have better roads and traffic management and car safety design features.

personally don' think speed less than 50kph realistic except for 40 kph going through school zone

cartman58, as stated in an earlier post (this topic) the introduction of 50klm/h speed limits in residential areas resulted in a 12% increase in road fatalities, majority being pedestrians, at slower speeds pedestrians tend to go under the car rather than over it at higher speeds. I beleive that Head Up Displays (HUD) on inside of windscreens and immediate loss of license for using a cell/mobile phone while driving will do more to save lives than lowering speed limits, Regards Frank.

Where did you get those figures from?

When QLD introduced 50kph zones there was no change. The reason was that only a handful of pedestrians were actually killed each year in the areas that were made 50k zones. It's a while since I saw the figures but if I remember the total deaths in the new 50k zones was about half a dozen with little or no change after the introduction.

Most pedestrian accidents are caused by smashed pedestrians.

Capt., sorry cant give you the vol. number but it was 2002 or 3 when I was looking at buying a BA Falcon GT, I still have it somwhere, I'll see if I can find it and get back to you, Regards Frank.
