HDC makes that noise when applied in High range!!!
Its TOO fast even in low range.
The D2 manual will walk down alot slower by itself with CDL engaged!!!.
BUT the clever people at Landrover removed that option, unless its a D2a,when they decided a locked CDL works real well with traction control.
SAD ACCIDENT,but an easy mistake to be made when relying on electronics.
I ONLY use HDC to excersise my shuttle valves in the ABS,helps prevent 3 amigoe issues!!!!

Cheers for all of the replies. Mate says hhe was in 2nd low, and the ABS may have failed. Dunno why it would run away other than he stalled it then tried to "ride the rollercoaster" down. Again, correct training could have avoided all of this AND a written off vehicle. The sad thing is they are all blaming the Disco and i don't think he will get another. The line was "and extreme way to get a new Patrol".

Also... was wondering why he couldn't have just driven down in 2nd low as the track was dry. You have all answered this for me though.

    Just glad all was OK.

    Thank you brains trust!

Not the D2s fault, just wait until he goes down a steep hill in the Patrol

They have really tall gearing in low range.

    Cheers Baz.

Nothing like a theory from someone not there

What's the speed for HDC for 2nd Low? There is a graph somewhere that states the speeds of all the gears in HDC. I think you will find that 2nd gear low is about 14kph when HDC is activated and working.

One of the big problems with HDC is there's a very long time before it recognizes the speed and activates. Depending on the steepness of the desent means you could potentially be up to 20 - 30kph before HDC takes over.

This could be the reason why it was a runaway.

And the very reason why I don't trust it

    Interesting thoughts from all....

When mentioned about getting a Patrol instead, i chucked in "Or maybe a Defender".

I know it's easy to criticise, however, I have an auto TD5 and find the HD works fantastic. It kicks in almost immeditely and does a great job.
