Police shot at in ADELAIDE

just an update.... this will be interesting in court!

A PARALOWIE man who allegedly fired an assault rifle at two police officers yesterday has claimed he was not the gunman.
The man, 34, appeared briefly in Elizabeth Magistrates Court this afternoon, charged with attempting to murder the two young officers who attended his Thorngate Drive home about 5.30am yesterday.

Both officers suffered schrapnel wounds to the face when a single bullet hit a metal bar on the front screen door and splintered.

The man surrendered to police about 7.30am after a siege in which he went on to the roof of his neighbour's house armed with the M16 rifle.

Prosecutors told Magistrate Frederick Field that the man denied firing the shot at the policemen, and had told detectives another man had been responsible for the shot.

Did anyone see the ACA report on Matt Butcher tonight, hope the WA govt gives him a huge payment then sues the bugger that got him:mad:

Yes, it seems that civil action may have to be taken against the the lowlife grub. Why can't the police union fund an action on behalf of Matt Butcher? At worst it will financially cripple the gutless wonder. A public appeal would have Australia wide support for Matt, I feel.

I'll donate to any appeal for him.

BTW, did I hear correctly that cops in WA don't have workers comp? If that's correct, that's appalling!

What about other States?

I believe it is the same in other states as it is for ADF personnel because of the people you deal with it is not possible for the govt to always provide a "safe" work place:o

The associations won't fund an action as it would be going against the very government they would have to be negotiating with next time pay negotiations are at the table. Yes, it is that political. In NSW, when the Commissioned Police Officers Association was united with the Police Association, thus creating "one" association", they lost even more teeth.

There had been, previously, a terrific scheme in place in NSW, and those in the know will know what I'm talking about - "pre-1988 officers". But cunning state ministers disbanded that scheme, and for many years, post-1988 police in this state essentially had no real cover. For instance...2 police - one a pre-88 the other a post-88, receive identical injuries in a pursuit say. Both can't return to work. Pre-88 officer, through a superannuation pension scheme hard fought for years ago, receives maximum benefits for life, which then continues onto his/her spouse on death. Post-88 essentially gets nothing.

This was addressed a few years ago with the introduction of the death and disability scheme...essentially self funded through fortnightly contributions. However, it is a far cry from the former scheme.

Case in point - a female officer recently here in Sydney was searching a female's handbag - received a needle stick injury - her claim has been knocked back.

As far as a police officer's work place is concerned...it is wherever they stand/wrestle/shoot/fart whilst executing their duty. As such, they are covered by worker's compensation legislation and the D&D scheme. Beyond that though, it comes down to corrupt insurance companies who are in charge of administering the death and disability schemes, as to whether they accept claims of injury whilst at work, and any ongoing treatment.

People who work in careers where there is as an inordinately greater risk to their health and safety should be covered adequately. Unfortunately, a succession of corrupt governments, with no money, vote themselves pay rises and superannuation increases, but leave the public behind.

My suggestion was that the union fund the civil action against the scumbag who attacked Matt Butcher.
