a reminder about telstra directory assistance

    Telstra Phone book

For anyone contemplating using the Sensis directory service number, 1234,

    DON'T!

Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra.

The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then 4c A SECOND!

By law, Telstra must provide a FREE directory assistance number.
They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.

    The free number is 1223

Thumbs down to Telstra for finding a way to 'charge', for a service that is supposed to be provided for free.

The free Telstra directory assistance numbers are 1223 and 12455, although they attract a charge of 44 cents from business and mobiles and are only free to Telstra customers. There is also an optional $1.10 connection fee.

The Optus number 124'yes' (124937) charges $1.10 for connection plus local call rates for the duration of the call.
Still cheaper than the "premium" service.

But personally I haven't used directory assistance in many years.

Telstra are good at that sort of thing! Personally I use whitepages.com.au at home because you get all of Australia at once, and maps too.

Problem with White Pages is that the numbers of many people who have their land line from service providers other than Telstra are not listed, nor are most mobiles.
