Was born there & lived there most of my life. It is a beautiful place but full of extremes.

Too many good people have died trying to help. You are not safe there like you are in Oz. Too many guns & too many people ready to use them with little or no provocation.

There must be safer places in the world who would appreciate your good heart.

    Just my opinion.

I was born and raised there. You will be in for a shock to your system. Absolute extremes proverty, unbeleivable crime and hatred and then on the other hand kindness, generosity and friendship.

Talk to the locals before venturing anywhere. i would recommend visiting Namibia its a fantastic country. Deserts, bush and good people. There is also lots of landys there.

What ever you do make sure you are aware of the situation at all times. You will notice personal safety is a big issue. Living in Oz we don't realise how safe and sound we all are. Good luck and go for it. Africa the dark continent fantastic place to see.

    Once or twice....

Where? South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Uganda, Burundi, Sudan, and Somalia.

What did you do? Cleared landmines, met and married my wife, ran contracts in gold mines, visited my family as much as possible. For the past nine months I have been running the US Dept of State contract supporting the African Union Force (AMISOM) and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia.

what are your thoughts? Africa opened my mind. It gets into you like no other place I have lived/worked in...Europe/Cambodia/Bosnia/Timor Leste/Afghanistan.

Humanity came out of Africa. Yes, it is markedly undeveloped. I find, that the developed world has become an economy and Africa is, profoundly, still a society. For me, humanity has never left Africa.

Go in with an open mind and keep your eyes open.

    do you recommend it? Yes.

There are photos and details in here of some of my time in Africa, particularly Mozambique: Employment Opportunities

Cape town, Johannesburg, Durban and east London on the coast.

Wow, I taught diving there and the people are very different.

The poor are very poor and the rich are very rich.
Both have guns and are not scared to use them.

Its strange because whites hate whites, blacks hate blacks and blacks hate whites and whites hate blacks. They just hate each other.
There are reasons but often too deep to understands.

I loved my stay there, I went 3 times actually but had to get out because the hatred was getting to me once I started to get to know more local politics.
We are so lucky here, many of us have no idea that we can drive down the road with the windows open. Not so in SA. Red lights mean slow down, if approached plant your foot and go.
Never ever go shopping on your own, daughters must be escorted everywhere and poverty greats you at every corner.

Good things are, locals are amazing, their smile melts your heart, their eyes glow even for the simplest things like installing a pump for running water, 1st Aid in villages and rice.
I can truly not fully describe the beauty as the hatred and fear is equally amazing.
If you go, go with a organisation that can assure your safety, when you come back you will be a different person, I can guarantee you that much.

I loved my time there, made some great friends and love the people.
Be safe, enjoy the journey, I did.

I went over for a business trip about 10 -12 years ago. Most of the time we were in Zimbabwe and Johannesburg in S.A.

Take note of the comments so far. Life is cheap over there, and it takes different mindset to that we are used to. Definitely go with a group, and do what the locals say. Very important not to charge off to places just because you have heard of them and you want to say you have been there. That can bring danger to yourself and whoever has been foolish enough to go along.

Even be wary of expats. Africa seems to attract the cowboys and those that don't fit in to the more disciplined societies. Wrong wording perhaps....... We found even some of the pilots weren't averse to taking the sort of risks that would not even be thought of back here. Can be pretty unsettling.

Glad I went, but more happy it was with a group. You need to be with people that will look out for each other.
