Best method I've seen for stovetop/moka pot coffee is here-
Stumptown Coffee Roasters - Brewing
I alway try to pour it before it gets to the thin watery sour stage, and make sure the pot is cleaned in between uses. When I was still using stovetops it meant three single-cup stovetops that were rotated through the dishwasher.
Nothing worse than stale coffee residue mucking up your fresh pot.
I have lately got onto an instant type coffee called Nescafe Short Black.
It's the only instant I've tried that is passable ( to my taste anyway ) for camping or when the real thing is not available. 1 and a bit teaspoons in a shot size of boiling water for a short black, or add frothed milk. ( I have one of those hand pump frother things came free with a bag of beans I bought once ).
Of course a proper Espresso still wins, by a mile, but this is better than the Mocconnas, freeze dries and coffee bags at least.
Can't drink instant. It wont stay down, and leaves me feeling crook for days.
Those stovetops are a handy little unit. Would be good for camping too.
We have a Saeco at home that does the lot, and after drinking from that, everything else is crap.
