    Woolworths (Safeway) saving money

    Saving them money, not you...

It would appear that Woolworths no longer gives you the option of choosing "credit" when you swipe your card at either their supermarkets or servo's.

We have a Visa debit card thru the credit union. Part of the deal with the credit union is that they promote using the "credit" function to save on fee's. We can use "credit" as much as we want, and providing the funds are available, not incur any fees.

If we use the "savings" or "cheque" options, then we are limited to 5 free transactions per month.

So, this means that in order for Woolworths to save the cost of the visa transaction, which I understand is around 1%, I either have to pay in cash, restrict myself to 5 transactions per month, or shop elsewhere.

Now, the "overuse" fees charged by the credit union are fairly steep, but this is part of the deal that I signed up for, and until now, has never been an issue.

Considering that as a family, we would spend between $500 & $800 per month at Woolworths, in both food & fuel, I can sort of see what they are going on about. However, what irks me, is that for them, it is a cost of doing business, and a tax deduction, where as for me, it yet another cost to our everyday living.

And, I can fully understand small companies, or the local snack bar, needing to keep a close eye on costs, and I dont have a problem with this, but when you consider that in Woolworths own half year report, they are proud of the fact that for the half year ending January 2010, they reported an increase of their net profit after tax to $1,095.6 million (11.4%), then I start to have issues.

Your thoughts, opinions & experiences are always appreciated.

I had a servo try this one on...

Sorry mate I dont have enough funds in the card to cover it on savings. you advertise you take credit cards. IF you cant, its your problem and you need to work out how to take your fuel out of my tank and I'll go to the servo over the road.

Try it on load up 2 huge trolly loads of stuff that you and a couple of mates need then pull out the credit card what, no credit, my bad, I'll just go get this stuff from your competitor. They soon work out how to push the credit button.

I understand that it is only debit cards.

Just to get even, we will use the Amex, which costs them closer to 4%...

    Try this one too

Roll up fill up your vehicle walk in and ask who do I make the cheque out to? Had to do this a few years back as I relised forgot the wallet after I had already filled up.

There was all sorts of a carry on, "we do not accept cheques". etc etc. They would not give me a name to write on the cheque so I just wrote pay cash and dropped it on the counter and walked out.

At that time a cheque was legal tender, as long as funds were in the account, dont think anythings changed? They had to take the cheque as payment for the fuel.

They were not at all happy

I believe this only effects credit option on the Visa debit card. Other debit cards or credit cards should be ok. (for now....)

    Pretty poor form I reckon.

We have the same deal with our credit union. It just reinforces my position of not shopping at woolworths. Cant stand them.

Will only go to woolies if they have something we want on special. Would rather go to coles and we prefer Shell over Caltex in the petrol department.

ha, maybe some truth to that but we generally buy fuel from united servos and shop at iga, makes us feel we are doing our bit.
actually seen iga now will refund 4c/ltr off any fuel receipt presented, assuming that is fuel bought without using anothers 4c discount.
    cheers
