    Headphones

I'm looking to replace a set of Sennheiser HD420 headphones that are at least twenty five years old now for a model with noise cancelling. I've tested a few and settled on another set of Sennheisers that I can buy locally for $310 from an online store. I can get the same ones off Ebay for AU$210 from the US but they come from a lot that have been re-manufactured to new condition by Sennheiser.

I plan on keeping on keeping these for a long time (read another 20 years) with a fair bit of flying time. From others experience is it worth the bit more or are manufacturer refurbished items with warranties a pretty good way to save a bit?

For the relatively small difference between I'm inclined to go new, locally.

    I've got the Bose QC15's.

They are pricey, but work very very well and don't sound too bad at all. They have that typical Bose sound - sharp and crisp - missing a little mid range and a tad 'cold'.

I have some none NC Sennheiser ones but went the Bose because I got them on special. I prefer the sound of the Bose over the Sennheiser.

Find a shop that has them, try them on for comfort and sound. If you are going to have them for 20 years then $100 extra for some that you will like more is nothing.

Have you used NC headphones before? If not, then DEFIANTLY go to a shop and try them first. They put a bit of pressure on your inner ear which feels like you are flying with a cold - it can either be annoying or extremely uncomfortable. Luckily I seem to be able to deal with it.

I have a set of Bose QC2 headphones and have done lots of miles wearing them. I find that after about 10 hours they make my ears a little sore as they are over ear stlye ones but the fit is very much a personal thing. Good on the ride on mower as well
As a cheap alternative I have a set of Logitech NC headphones that are reasonable quality for the price as well.

Regarding remanufactured items, I think Sennheiser are one of those brands who would not want their name tarnished by inferior products, and once out of the packaging, there is no way to tell if a unit has been remanufactured or not-if they failed prematurely then people would lose loyalty and their reputation lowered. So I would expect the remanufactured items will be as good as new items.

I bought a set of Bose QC2 for $140 of eBay but the seller has since been removed from eBay.

They were great until I crushed them in my bag going to work one day. I superglued them back together but one of the wires that cross over your head has broken.
