If you are going to fit chains to the front just make sure that they won't rub front or rear at full lock.
Hey we had 0, -1 last night and I didnt have to go anywhere near an alpine region. Could have cross countried down the road this AM. Will possibly get frosts 6-7/10 nights til september. No Alpine diesel at Rouse Hill Servo.
Love the snow too nothing silly about it
This from the NSW Dept of the Environment website:
Quote:
It is compulsory to carry properly-fitting snow chains if you are driving a two-wheel-drive vehicle from the June to October long weekends on the following roads:
Chains may also be required in certain weather conditions on the Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains Highway. Check road conditions before you travel.
- Kosciuszko Road from the park boundary at Thredbo River
- the Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin
- the Island Bend/Guthega Road for its full length
For this reason the RTA recommends that chains be carried during winter along the Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Thredbo and when travelling along the Snowy Mountains Highway.
Snow chains should be fitted as directed by authorised NPWS, RTA and Police officers.
4WD vehicles are not required by law to carry snow chains but due to the high incidence of 4WD vehicle accidents in Kosciuszko National Park, the RTA now recommends they do-especially if drivers have little experience driving in snow/ice risk sections.
Interesting comparison ...my "little" bro lives in the NE of the USA...where they have "june-august" and winter the rest of the time...
He has driven various evolutions of the Honda Civic there for years ...with summer tyres for June-Aug and winter treads for the remainder. He tells me that very few people there ever use chains... .just winter treads...and front wheel drive ... guess it's what you're used to...
Strongly suggest a Diamond pattern. Mine are Konig brand. Fitted just once last year Harrietville to Dinner Plain and always fitted to front wheels. Its amazing how many coxs ignore "fit chains here" signs and roar past only to cause traffic hazards sitting in one spot spinning further up the hill. I just laugh click on the indicator and chug on by! Its a great feeling..................even better when they sit up your freckle weaving left and right so you pull over and let them pass only to catch them at the ticket box being instructed that 2wd's need to fit chains. Again a little chuckle toot on the horn and chug on by!
