    Mechanics

Just say I take my Defender dual cab to the mechanic because the gearbox is making loud whirring noises when I slow down and depress the clutch moving down through the gears. The mechanic fixes it and charges me one arm and one leg. But one week later, the clutch appears to go as it now becomes difficult to change down through the gears, with loud grinding noises as I try to put the engine down each gear, having to force it into gear both with brute strength and revving the motor to get it in the gear required.
Has this mechanic taken me for a ride when he says it is unrelated to the $3,500 work he has just done on the gearbox?

Generally, the clutch should be replaced (at the very least inspected) when the gearbox is out, since much of the cost in doing this is labour. A HD clutch kit comes in at around $600, so in the scheme of things it makes sense to replace it at the same time...

In a Defender it is more common for the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder to cause this symptom.

I'll back that, we've just had a lt95 do this at work.

2 weeks ago we put in a new box
Tuesday it came back with a "cant select gears" fault which turned out to be the master cylinder piston seal torn. It came back today and its dumping clutch fluid out of the bell housing.

ive had two master cylinders go on lurch.......and both times there was no wet left foot.....

the second time i had to really look hard to notice any fluid.........most of the problem was internally.......

check the clutch fluid level and give it a quick bleed.......and this should fix it all.......and let you know that its not the gearbox......
