my mate had his HB split in 2 the other week which caused a bit of damage -
in the end he needed a new radiator, fan, belt and HB. apprently its not that un common and you really can't do anything about it

after playing with everything that can make noises I found out I need a harmonic balancer replaced. Has anyone here had it done "professionally" recently.....and what was total costs?
I have read all the threads on the hb replacement diy.

Hi All
I replaced mine at the start of the month look at around $1000 to $1200 for the balancer and then if the tensioner and the idler pulley need replacing another few hundred + about 4-6 hrs labor.

Doug
The only time I have had trouble with a harmonic balancer and had to replace it, I found the damage had been caused by a seized belt tensioner bearing
which grabbed the belt and the harmonic balancer was the weakest part of the equation.
The reason I mentioned this is that perhaps whilst you are replacing the thing it may be an idea to check out all the reasons that it could have failed.
For the sake of a couple of dollars of bearing, in my case, it ended up costing me a lot more including the inconvenience of no car for a couple of days.
Regards
Glen
