We were out there last week, Halligan Bay, camped for the night. It was amazing to see. We drove up the Birdsville Track to see the punt in operation. Just an amazing sight to see all of that water out there.
The road into Halligan bay is a bit rough, however they were just starting to grade it when we left. They were watering the bulldust as we left, that made for some fun.

I'll be heading up there in about 3 weeks with the family (and Sschmez with his family??) if I can convince him he needs to go.
What was the helicopter flight cost?
Was that from Marree?
Are you aware of any other flights that will take the missus, me and three little kids? From where?
I know Wright Air flies out of William Creek as I understand it. Do you know of any other places closer?

Hi Darren,
Phillip Island Helicopters are the only ones doing heli work in the area at the moment.
A 90min flight in the helicopter is $595 per person for 2 people, or $495 per person for 3 people. The flight skirts the bottom of the north lake, as the helicopters don't have the range of the fixed wing aircraft. Cruising speed is 200kph and you fly in at 1500 feet and return at 500 feet, which affords a closer view of the landscape than a plane flight. Plus you have more window area.
There are several fixed wing flights out of Marree. Marree and William Creek will offer the cheapest flights over the lake, due to their proximity. Flights out of Birdsville are a couple of hours longer and hence more expensive. Fixed wing flights are around $350ea.
Many of the air charter companies operate out of the Marree Pub, and they will offer you free camping at the back of the pub. There's only one shower / toilet per sex, and the hot showers are a $2 donation in the honesty box. There were about 15 vehicles camped there when we went, but that didn't pose any issues.
Muloorina is a $10 donation, per vehicle per night, and it gets quite a crowd. There were about 10 vehicles there when we camped, so arrive early in the day/afternoon if you want to get a spot by the water. Swimming is permisable, which this time of year may be okay in the middle of the day.
Things are due to get busy over the school holidays, so be sure to make some phone queries and consider booking a flight.
The Cooper Creek ferry (should you be heading that way) will not take trailers or caravans according to the notice at the Marree Pub, so make your plans accordingly.
Road conditions are all good, and if you're going past the Flinders ranges, it's worth detouring through them. They're the greenest I've ever seen them.
