    Lake Eyre

Has anyone been up to Lake Eyre recently?

I'll be heading up on Thursday from Melb and I'm planning a 5 day return trip.

Due to the limitations of time, I'll go as far as Marree and then do a flight. A day trip out of Marree would be a possibility if there are any recommendations.

A friend had a stroke last year, and he is being funded a short holiday by a charity. I can't fit the family in the car as well, otherwise I could drag it out a bit longer.

I'll post some photos when I return.

Dick Smith was on the radio a few weeks ago saying he was heading up that way to operate the Cooper Creek punt, as the river is well up..
Should be awesome pics from up high..

    Outstanding.

We are planning a trip in September (with the parents-in-law). They have a Pajero, but I make allowances...

Looking forward to it. (Can;t afford a plane though).

Anyone have any leads on good maps to get ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    Michael,

I have just been there, we went to Maree, then north to Muloorina station where there is camping beside a waterhole, $10/ vehicle/ night. Beautiful spot. From there it is a 40 odd km drive on dirt to the south edge of North lake Eyre, and is dry at present in that area. Flights are the only way to see water as far as I know, which is many miles to the north still.

Still a fantastic spot and I'll be back there again if I can. See my thread 'Trip update' in multi state reports section. A few pics there also.

When I went there last year, left perth and all reports said it was full, about 10 or 12 days later when I got there the water was just visable. I have some vidio of the water on full zoom with the vidio camera and a few shot with the camera that the water isnt visable. Would have been nice to walk down to it but didnt have half a day spare. The water seem to disapear nearly over night.
    cheers

Well I'm back. 3,300km in 5 days, almost a third of it on dirt roads. Photos to follow in the next 24-48 hours.

Day one was the longest drive 1,250km (Melb East to Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges). The shortest drive day was 144km (Marree - Lake Eyre Sth - Muloorina).

Problems? One of the rear quarter windows popped out of the rubber somehow, and I had to refit it, not before it sucked in some dust. And a parker fuse blew a couple of hundred kms from home. I'd better go and sort it out now.

The Defender just likes to drive, and my right foot is grateful for cruise control.

Cruise control ? Is yours a manual or auto conversion?
(I've never had cruise in a manual car)

Looking forward to the pics etc. Cheers.
