    Feral cat

We have a cat coming into our yard and killing the wild birds...Grrr.

I dont have a trap but I have heard that asprin mixed up with sardines or some such will kill it !!!
    Is that right ?
I could shoot it but if I didn't drop it on the spot and be able to dispose of it, I might find myself dobbed in, eh.

    Any other sensible suggestions, please.

    Robert.

Ask your local Council to trap it for you, baits are non-selective and could do more harm than good, good luck, regards Frank.

    Angry I hate ferals too!!!!

your best bet would be if you dont wont to shoot the little deary (alough it is quite theraputic) would be to get in touch with your local council ranger and they should loan you a trap for the little bugger, we used to have the same problem except we had a large aviary with lots of exotic birds and the feral cats were basically scaring them to death!, and yes i hagve heard that milk and aspro will kill a cat its just wether your cat prefer's milk?...... or meat?

G'day Robert, Apparently the milk/aspro mix does work as my father in law used to use this method. I live near Hay Point and have trouble with a feral tomcat spraying around my house. I have tried trapping him with a trap hired from the council (for $10 per week) but he is too cunning to go in the trap so it looks like I will have to try the milk/aspro mix myself. If you hire a council one and you catch the feral all you do is take the cat to the pound and they euthenase it if it has no microchip.Regards....Brian

Shoot it. If you get a loan of a trap then you have to dispose of the cat by whatever means the council specifies.

    Thank you.

I will try the asprin bit with both milk and meat.
I will also get a trap from the council if I can.

Bugger taking it to the Pound, I will bash it on the head !!!

I connected a couple of motion sensors to my sprinkler system, every time the cat jumped the fence it got wet. I didn't take it long to get the point.

    Cheers,

Shooting it is the best method.
Depending on size of your property wether you are allowed to discharge a firearm. There is no offence for destroying vermin on your property.
The disprin trick while effective is a very cruel way of killing an animal. I have seen it first hand on a couple of occassions. First one took a long time to die and I ended up breaking its neck, second I immediately got my .22 and euthanased it. Had nothing to do with the disprin though and really despise that type of baiting.
Most councils will supply traps and may even assist or dispose.

I'd be very wary of trying that approach.

If the cat is "feral" as you say, you'll do well to get close enough to it to bash its head in, wring its neck or cut its throat without it doing you a lot of damage first. I wouldn't even try it wearing welding gloves or similar.

We used to catch a lot of feral cats in traps on a minesite I worked at a while back, and even a trapped kitten is bloody dangerous.

A convenient (and I've been told, humane) way to knock them off is to place some type of cover (inverted plastic tub will do the job) over the trap with the cat still inside, with a fitting made into the plastic tub that is then connected via a length of vaccuum cleaner hose or similar to the exhaust pipe of your car with the engine running. From experience, this method puts them to sleep pretty quickly without any pain.

A mate down the road from here used to have a next door neighour (little old lady) who had literally dozens of cats, most of which used to venture into my mate's yard on a frequent basis. It's a wonder the little old lady never complained about how often my mate used to be working on / tuning his V8 Holden ute in his shed, as the engine could frequently be heard idling - and one of her cats would not show up for a feed that night.
    Cheers .........

I trap lots of ferals too. Some have collars. But the exhaust trick only works with a petrol engine not diesel. I usually shoot them in the trap with .22 Z ammo or the pump up air rifle.
