The final poster does not understand how cruise control works, if he thinks it should slow him down while going down hills.LOL . Maybe with the new tech ones in a Merc but not in a "cheap" Toyota.

Aside from the we went on an information night organised by the club to one of the larger diesel services that do a lot of work for Toyota. They had rebuilt something like 1600 common rail systems over the last 12 months, all damaged by dirty fuel and/or water contaminiation. Made me think carefully where I filled up I can tell you. I guess we need our fuel distribution systems to catch up with the times.

Yes and no..... the problem is that common rails circulate the fuel between the tank and the injector pump at such a rate that a typical water trap could fill up in less than a minute. Also means that any crud will get circulated through the entire system far more quickly than on a system where the return is a low volume.
Not saying it can't be engineered around but you go to any of the fuel companies and they'll tell you "our fuel is clean, you dont need additional filtration." At the night we attended it was mentioned that our fuel is pretty good at the refinery gate, then it gets pumped into tanks that have been in the ground for 60 years etc.

It seems to me that the onus is on manufacturers to design vehicles that can use the fuel available. After all, they changed the engines so they would run on unleaded when leaded fuel was discontinued - the usual way of doing things is to ensure the appropriate fuel is available before changing the design, rather than finding the new design won't run on existing fuel, and saying "we need to improve our fuel chain". Available fuel shoould have been taken into account when designing the vehicle. After all, Landrover did this in Series Landrovers, deliberately lowering the compression to ensure they could run on available fuel in all markets.

Land Rover had this problem when the TD5 was first introduced.
There were quite a number of injectors replaced under warranty, and at the time they cost LRA something like $18-$2000 each.

You don't hear of this in the Td5 now, so someone, somewhere changed something and fixed the potential problem.

We don't all live in the city, and a lot of people use their vehicles for what they were designed for, off road, travelling, etc, and so fuel may not always be 'clean' in all places, although all the small, privately owned servos are disappearing thanks to the latest round of EPA regulations.

We've lost our local here, it was going to cost in excess of $120,000 to update a servo that serves a community of a couple of hundred people and the owners mark up was 4c/litre, but I digress....
