I would love one but after a lot of soul searching regarding getting one - I can get my hands on a pristine 404, I would rather a new OKA camper

Remember that a 404 is almost a 40 year old design - it's hot, rough and noisy. Great for a weekend of fun, but not really what you want to drive around Australia in. Think of it more like an Acco or 101. Expect to pay around $15K for a good 404 - so it's not really in the same class as an OKA price wise

Not even close in price and I may still buy it if SWMBO agrees as a toy, but looking at the OKA for the cost - it's not cheap, and looking at what is required to do up a modern mog to the same level is a whole lot more $$$. And to be perfectly honest apart from portals just as capable and much cheaper parts; also in a vehicle of this type it's a touring camping rig not a full blown extreme vehicle (which the mog is and is the king)

    Here you go, chaps:

    Autotrader.co.za ? 1996 UNIMOG 4X4 from KwaZulu-Natal

    Price is around AUD$ 28,600.

If you shop around, there are cheaper models over here.

Or you can buy an ex-SADF SAMIL 20:

    Autotrader.co.za ? SAMIL 20. from Gauteng

Essentially a Mog rolling chassis, with a different cab and dropsides. RHD.
Some had the Magirus Deutz diesel, some had the Merc diesel, and some might even have had a Nissan diesel, considering these babies were converted by Nissan's MAGNIS plant (Magirus/Nissan consortium).

The "Buffel" was built on a Unimog Chassis and had portal axles, but the Samil 20 was a Magerius Deutz chassis. A great little truck, but as noisy as a 404 and just as primitive. I drove Samil 20, 50' and Unimogs in the SADF - I preferred the 404 over the others - better ride and brakes. The Samil 50 was the quietest though, but that's a big truck

Iain, quite correct, just goes to show it's been a fair number of years since I've been near one!

There are still Buffel rolling chassis to be had.

    Hi David (SpudBoy)

I've seen the ADF have now put the LR and Unimogs among other vehicles up for public tender. I'm keen to have a close look at Unimog here in South Australia. Do you, or anyone else know of any mogs driven by the general public. For me it would be good to get an idea of how practical (expensive) it is to own one, when you're not in the business of protecting the country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Troy

Hi Troy - I don't know anyone in Adelaide with a Mog, so I can't think of a good solution for you on that one, I'm sorry.

What I did was contact the Army base up at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills (they have about 20 or so up there that I saw). They were not real keen to let me in, but I have a Navy mate in Canberra who organised a pass. You just need someone to vouch for you and then it is OK.

Once in - the guys were brilliant and spent over an hour letting me look at it and poke around. Worth a try, for sure. They were well maintained, but aged.

I have only driven one, and have to say I was not bowled over. Search for a thread here on "underwhelmed" and "Unimog" and you'll probably find it. The one I drove was pretty shagged though I think. Cabin is surprisingly small. Acceleration was on par with my Series I Land Rover

As for the costs of running one, they are not going to be cheap. 10MPG. Insurance (for me) was going to be $2K a year (from memory) and rego is $1800/yr. Tyres are $2K each. etc etc.

I too am waiting to see what comes up when the Army get rid of theirs of course. If they go for a ridiculously cheap price ($20K!!?) I'd think about buying 2, putting the best bits into one, and selling the rest as parts. Who knows? Ben (from Canberra) sold a couple of ex-NZ 1700/L38's for $60K each last year, so maybe the Army ones will go for this type of price too.

    Cheers
    David
