Every drill truck pretty much I work with is a MAN well except for those doing the Tatra experiment which is a bit umm interesting. So the rig carrier, water truck and the air booster although these tend to be all 8by8's so I'd be kinda surprised if parts were hard to get. I suspect however whenever these come up for sale they tend to get sold to those in house or in the know.

Had grandious delusions of getting a 8by with a tilt tray and maybe a 3-5 tonne hiab and doing remote area recovery, then someone posted a picture of a MAN KAT!

Hi Troy - with the army Unimogs potentially coming up for sale I have been wasting a bit of time on the internet looking at alternatives, and the Merc 1617 comes up quite a bit.

I also found some pages on the later Axor 4x4 Merc trucks like this:

Which look to have similar offroad features to a Mog, but leaf springs and drum brakes. Haven't seen any secondhand at all, so maybe they are too new. There is another model called Actros which also comes in 4x4 but again nothing second hand.

Can't immediately work out the difference between the Actros and the Axor but I guess one is heavier duty than the other. If they are fairly new then the price is likely to be well into 6 figures which kind of rules them out as an option really!

I think these would have 'proper' road speeds, unlike the Mog. Not sure if either come with low range gears, but it is all academic if you can't find anything second hand at a reasonable price.

Will be interested to see what other options you come up with apart from the Unimog idea.

For about $60k here is a Merc option 4x4 that's a bit older than the one in the link that you sent through. I'll keep searching and keep you up to date.

Isn't it possible to get a Volvo 404 in Oz?

I had to do a search to see what a Volvo 404 looks like (rather like a 101 Land Rover perhaps?) and I'd have to say I have never seen one here in Australia. Are they around in South Africa?

We'd be so lucky. It seems common only in Europe.

We do have access to a lot of ex-military Mog rolling gear, though.

Some of the older-generation mine-protected vehicles were Unimog-based.

These have mostly been decommissioned and the armour-plting sold for scrap.

The problem we have is that all of these chassis are LHD which are now illegal over here, so the axles and some of the drive-train are the only valuable bits.

What do you mean by 'umm interesting' referring to the Tatras? Just curious as I know a bloke who has a 4x4 Tatra and want to stir him up.

I've been salivating over that one for a while. Unicat do the most amazing camper conversions. My problem with this vehicle is only a small one... my budget. I've got a few years for a home spun project which will probably work out to be twice the price of this one :).

If the price is a printing error and it's $17,000 then I'd be more than happy to take you for a spin.
