The irony is that cramped spaces work well in space craft, something the yanks leant the hard way.
The Russians had their cramped space station so the yanks built their huge Skylab space station and not until it was manned, in space, that they realised big was definitely NOT better.
The problem with big ROOMY space craft, is that once you push off from the floor or roof or walls, you now have to wait till you drift to the other side before you can control your movements.
Whereas, in the cramped Russian space station, you were always in arms reach of a wall or what ever so you could easily and QUICKLY manoeuvre yourself around the craft.
Did you hear that in the 60's and 70's the USA apparently spent $ M inventing and maufacturing a biro that would write upside down for use in space.
The Russians used a pencil ;)
An awesome site!!!!:)
I've been through it a few years ago, and you would not want to be very tall in it. Even the beds were only about 5' long. I could not imagine how crowded it would have been with all the people on it. There was not much room anywhere and hot steam pipes and hot and moving bits of engine ready for you if you slightly unbalanced etc
Great shots thanks mate. One thing I could never be is a submariner I don't suffer from claustrophobia but all tin cans including tanks are not my kettle of fish. At least in the mud there is always good fresh air ( well most of the time anyway;) )around you.
On the index page down the LHS there are some other great ones.. the SHorts SOlent flying boat is a cracker !
