    When I was a young knockabout fella, my mates and I were wont to measure feminine pulchritude or lack thereof by the schooner scale. How many schooners you had to drink before the subject looked good enough for a bit of boudoir folk dancing. some were off the schooner scale and were measured in bottles of rum.

    The other trick was at my surf club. We would go to the beer garden at the Cabbage Patch on Saturday night and put in two bob each for a pool for the Ugly Bird Prize. Wnner was the clubbie who pulled the ugliest bird. There were certain regulars who were barred from the field as being unfair competition.

    We use to pick the "gauge" when we went out drinking, when she was looking good, it was time to stop drinking and go home.
