Why swap out a 'good' series of toyota diesel for a bad one??? The 2L is a far more reliable engine, just down on power. The good option is a 2L with aftermarket turbo, as the factory Toyota Surf turbo is a one off made by Toyota and VERY exxy to repair. They are well made BUT won't last forever.. Ditch the surf electronic injector pump, and just put up with getting blitzed on hills by Tdi auto Discos...:wasntme:
The 3L and 5L are both prone to bearing and crank failures if you don't change the oil EVERY 5000km. There is a 100% chance of bottom end failure at 10,000km oil change interval, that is if you get to 10,000km before the engine does a bearing. Never have I seen a 'modern' diesel engine soot up so quickly. Forget using Synthetic oils etc, the best thing is use a good mineral oil and change at 5K. The Z9 filter might be cheap, but 2 oil changes for every 1 in a Tdi etc is wasteful.
I'd LOVE to fit a 300Tdi to a lowlux and turn it into a real performer, AND get up the nose of a few lowlux worshippers:D:D
On second thoughts, that'd be a waste of a perfectly good 300Tdi.....:(

They actually deserve some credit. Not up to Landie capability but - with a few mods- a very capable vehicle. I've been away on a few trips with these guys now.
Here is my mate's reply.
Dave, we are doing this transplant on Travis's surf at the moment, it is supposed to be the simplest of transplants however the following needs to be considered.
Turbo fits right on, however the 3l block does not have an oil catch inlet on it so you need to manufacture one into the side of the sump. approx $100 of parts.
The 3 lt sump is no good to use and I dont have the specs of the sump and oil pick required but can get them off Travis (as he is in Darwin at the moment) or off the forum.
I will have a troll through some posts and get as much info as needed.
More than happy to help your mate, only cost is he has to come out on a trip with us lol.
Just out of curiosity what year hilux did he buy and and is he selling parts off it when he is done. I am looking for a steel winch bar for an IFS model hilux.
Also.. a link to this job.
