I hate to mention the T word but..

I hate to mention the T word but my mate insists on driving them. Anyway as he has not got a computer he has asked me to place a thread asking for help.

His surf has a 2.4 turbo which seized due to a faulty oil filter.

Now he has just bought a Hilux intending to put the non turbo 3L in the surf but wants to know if he can swap over the Turbo bits off the 2.4 onto the non turbo 2.8 and if there are any problems in doing so.

I would have gone to the surf fourm but they won't let me in. Must be a Toyota thing.

yes it can be done and is regularly
it may be worth changing the injector pump at the same time

Have done a hairdryer conversion for a mates 3L.

-We used a kit so everything fitted, would be worth checking that the exhaust manifold is compatible between his particular surf turbo and the recipient 3L.
-The 3L is notorious for cracking and cooking heads, if it is not already cracked the extra heat load with turbo and increased fueling can be a death knell. If I were doing the job I would pull the head to inspect and put a new gasket in.
-New glowies and new injector tips.
-Ensure the cooling system hoses pump thermo are renewed and either recore or new rad.
-The dump pipe to first section of exhaust squeezes past the chassis rail may just need some massaging for clearance.

Have fun! the 3L is nice simple engine like a 300tdi easy to work on.

Non turbo engines usually have lighter components, like smaller con-rods, lighter pistons and dont usually have oil squirters to cool the inside of the pistons, may work OK but certainly will not last as long as a purpose built Turbo'd engine, Regards Frank.

All of the L series engines have interchangeable exhaust manifolds, may just have to reposition the studs.

Why bother. Aren't Surfs a girls car, or flight stewards and hairdressers. Judging by the numbers I see being recovered they are not suited to serious 4WD work.
