I don't know much about automatics, except that I don't like them.
So I need some help.
The not-so-loved Caravelle - big on space and oh-so-boring - is behaving strangely.
In a certain gear, if I take my foot off the accelerator and let it go it drops revs until 1250 and then it feels like it drops out of gear, and revs drop to 750 (idle). This can happen going uphill, downhill, or on the flat.
In other gears this doesn't happen.
The gearbox was leaking when I bought it, and the mechanic said it was pretty awful in there.
Dunno if he flushed or just refilled.
tia.

Well yeah, guess who gets the blame for buying an auto?
'But you wanted it so you could have a hand free to throw things at the kids, darling.'
What "gear" are you talking about? If it's one of the upper ones, it could be the TC-lock up slipping for some reason (I am by no means an auto-expert I have to admit). Does this make sense?

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
Sounds like the oil pump which supplies oil pressure to the torque converter then the gearbox is worn out. It is losing pressure when the engine revs drop. May need a new or recon gearbox. May also be a victim of crisis maintenence, ie only fix it when its broken or nearly broken.
Could be doing what it is supposed to do .....
some auto g/bs only lock up above a certain rpm in the highest gear
... auto g/bs (when working ok) are the best..... both on and off-road (see if that get s a comment, eh?)

You are so right, recently I towed a L/R and trailer up a very steep and slippery track with my 94 Disco 300TDi Auto, it took some doing as I had to start towing on the slippery steep slope, would NEVER had done it with a manual g/box. Autos multiply torque at low revs which allows you to use max. torque in situations like this. A manual g/box and clutch would never allow this tow to work, either clutch would have burnt out or something (axle, uni) else would have broken, manual g/boxes are great in trucks, they don't hold a candle to the auto in a 4wd, Regards Frank.
providing your oil doesnt boil up, your cooler doesnt block or blow a line, you dont blow a seal, dont have low oil levels, dont get contaminated oil, dont drop a clutch pack, get a sticky acutator, break the flex plate, strip the TC have the sprag clutch slip, break the uni in the propshaft (autos do that too), the kickdown cable doesnt slip or stick, and in the new ones The electronics dont go west.
yep, I can see why they are just so much better than a manual...
just for laughs, lets see who can push start their cars.
to put it on topic... is the vehicle speed staying relative to engine speed as its slowing down... from your description it could be a sticking throttle cable OR the box has been configured for engine braking.

couldnt have put it better myself......if only i could teach my wife to drive manual......i could get rid of her auto.....i guess it keeps her from driving my cars.......
as for simons car......what year model is it.......?
if its an electronic box.....a scan may even tell you whats wrong with it.....
it could be a solenoid......or a switch or sensor.....which can throw a fault code.....
