The sls is acoustic and is mounted permanetly in some US cities (miami and LA and new york etc) it is also mounted on humvies fully portable and accurate. The mortar and arty locating is radar usally veh mounted but can be semi perm at base camps and both only need 1 round to identify a target and impressive when slaved to arty or tanks even other mortars

Sounds great, didn’t really work. a big old white APC turns up with 3 whopping big whips. Snipers arnt that dum, they go home for lunch.
OR the 50cal chews though a belt, takes out the sniper and the family sitting having lunch behind 3 more block walls. Or 3 rooms behind the sniper.
The system I was reading about was obviously the same concept but there were photos of a cammed-up Hummer and it definately talked about extendable arrays and auto selection. So maybe a newer system on trial? It was years ago and I can't remember whether it said if it was operational or not.

But you're right, situation and ROEs enable or limit any system. Not often these days you'll be in an uncaveated Red Card scenario. IOW....shoot anything that moves without questions being asked.

I imagine it was designed for a conventional battlefield with clear lines on the map and unmuddied ROEs......long time since we've seen that and may never again.

I have friends, a married couple, both nurse-educators, who are working a three year contract in a rural distict of Saudi-Arabia. They attribute the appalling & dangerous driving of Saudis to '"In'sh Allah". They can race the train to the level crossing in the secure knowledge it will only hit them if God wills it so. Likewise the habit of two-way traffic in a one way street and a third lane up the middle for good measure, and drivng on the footpath to get around a parked car.

    I'd agree with their assessment.

And the Saudia Travellers Prayer while taxiing for takeoff was also very reassuring.

Just to get back on subject, if our high tech locating equipment is so flash, how come any videos I have seen about Tarin Kowt recently have included numerous mortar rounds seemingly lobbed at will by the Taliban?

AFAIK there are no civilian areas around the base, so why isn't a mortar round immediately followed by the aforementioned massive retaliation.

    Regards Philip A

Tarin Kowt is a civilian area (its a provincial capital), there are houses right up to the front gate of the base. All the patrol bases are in civilian areas - that's the whole philosophy of counter-insurgency, you must live with the people you are trying to protect. Insurgents fire rockets and mortars from within civilian back-yards to defeat the idea you have put forward. They aren't stupid.

There is almost no situation where indiscriminate fires could be employed "fully automatically". You must have a man (person) in the loop otherwise the potential for disaster is high. A US reporter was killed in Iraq before Baghdad fell by a US tank from the 4th ID - the tank was fitted with a system that detects the range finder beam on modern anti-tank weapons and automatically fires a round back down the beam - unfortunately for the reporter his camera used a similar system for the lens range-finder. That is an example of a system that operates without human input because the decision-action loop of a human would be (is) ineffective in this situation.

The US and others have spent ****loads of cash on this kind of tech over the years but not much actually makes it into service.

    Cheers,

    Adam
