    Lazy Discovery

Hi evryone, I took a low millage 1997 TDi Manual Discovery for a test drive yesterday and was really surprised at the lack of power it had, there was no noticable increase in pull as the revs wound up, and it was actually a lot slower than my old 2.8 lt diesel Tritton. There was No Turbo Whistle.Enginne started well no undue smoke. With 150000 kms on the clock the drivers seat had colapsed the headlining was on its way out.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or has theTurbo failed?

    Looking forward to replys.

The Tdi is a great engine, yes it's a bit under powered but you learn to live with it. It is slow off at the lights but once the turbo cuts in (1500 revs) it's fine. It will still do 110 ks on the highway except on very steep hills and should average 10lt per 100ks combined city/highway use. Tdi turbos don't whistle. As far as the turbo goes if it's not working you will know. Sounds like it might be a good buy, 150,000 ks on a tdi is nothing, but get it checked over buy a land rover mechanic to be on the safe side. How much do they want for it, if you don't mind me asking. And what accessories does it have.

Could be something simple holding it back, such as a pinhole or delamination in the Turbo hoses, or even a blocked air filter.

See if you can drive another one or two TDis, to compare.

They are no rocketship in standard mode, there are a few tweaks and mods you can do to improve that.

I'd wind the slack out off the throttle cable and try again,a disco will be slower than a triton simply because it's half a tonne heavier.Like posted above 150K is nothing,I'd buy it. Pat

Also remember the accelerator action is not linear - to stop the revs on the motor bouncing around on rough tracks caused by the foot bouncing around on the accelerator, accelerator action is reduced at lower settings and increases when the foot it depressed. Being a little heavier on the foot does bring a bit more response from the engine. The applies to the V8s of the period.

    Im with Pat.
    Stretched accelerator cable!!!!
Also just check there is no carpet/mat preventing full pedal travel.
A 2.8 Triton will not match a TDi in pulling power.
